My husband had open-heart surgery. He then had to be rushed down for emergency surgery when his blood pressure continually dropped for about 2 hours - Martina worked hard with the doctors to find solutions to the problems and kept me apprised of the situation when I came to check on him. When they thought he wasn't going to make it, she let me stand at the bedside and pray over him as they were preparing to rush him to surgery. Once they got him into surgery, Martina came out and gave me a reassuring hug before leaving (this was well after 90 minutes past her shift). She then took great care of him the next morning and was so competent and graceful in how she worked at weaning him off the many meds he came back to the unit on. The day after he was moved to the cardiac rehab section, Martina came over to see us and to reassure us that everything was going as planned. Martina is the model for what a great nurse is, being firm in her plan, keeping the patient first, knowing her job inside and out, being sympathetic with the family and doing her job with great confidence and grace.
