Mariah was assigned to the BOO (Baptist Operation Outreach) van that provides care for the homeless and undocumented immigrants. Many of the patients suffer from past abuse, serious health care problems, mental illness and addiction problems. She cared for these patients and their families with the upmost caring and compassion. Although she had not previously worked with such a vulnerable population, Mariah was able to connect and establish rapport by gently listening to their stories and being non-judgmental. Few students at this level are able to provide the degree of understanding that she did. As a result, several patients openly discussed with her their difficulties in making positive life style changes. I saw some of them cheerfully discussing how they planned to live healthier lives after mutually setting goals. Mariah freely admitted that this was eye opening for her as she had been taught that the homeless chose their fate and could live a healthier life style just by trying. I was and am impressed that this student nurse was able to put aside her beliefs and give care to a population who can be difficult to reach. She also worked with female inmates at the Shelby County Correctional Center to provide exercise classes and education on health care topics of their choosing. It was heartwarming to watch wary women come alive with music, exercise and yoga stretches.
