Maria's knowledge of medicine, exemplary bedside manner, and empathy allowed this patient and her family an advocate that they probably never imagined having.
There have been many incidences where I believe Maria has given exemplary meaningful care. One time though, that I still remember is when I was working with a really challenging end-of-life patient situation. The patient was a young mother who had a severe acute fatal lung infection. She and her family did not speak English nor did they have many community resources. I was the nurse and I do not speak Spanish. Maria, despite having her own assignment, assisted me in multiple crucial conversations with the entire team and the family to allow for a therapeutic environment for really challenging end-of-life decisions. Maria's knowledge of medicine, exemplary bedside manner, and empathy allowed this patient and her family an advocate that they probably never imagined having. She allowed this family to start the healing process prior to the patient actually passing away. She gave the family a voice and she allowed the staff at Cottage to be able to communicate that we were all supporting the family. We could have used a translator or the iPad but Maria quickly built a rapport with this family and the continuity of her being on the unit throughout this process was a support that really put the patient's needs first.
