Lori Gass has worked in the Intensive Care Nursery at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center for 26 years. She is a dependable, professional, registered nurse who is always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Lori's compassionate nature was fully displayed in October of 2014 when a baby born at 26 weeks gestation died at only seven days old. The parents of this child were naturally devastated. Lori assisted them, not only on the day that he died, but well beyond that day. She helped them to contact a funeral home and provided them with her physical presence and emotional support throughout the process of meeting with the funeral home staff. When the child's mother purchased a christening gown for burial that was way too big for the baby, Lori took it to her own tailor and had it altered. She tenderly and compassionately guided the parents of this tiny baby through the beginning of their grieving process, making herself available to sit and talk with them on her own time, attending the funeral, and checking on them afterward. Lori went above and beyond in her compassionate care of her tiny patient's family. They will forever remember the loving nurse who helped them at one of the saddest times of their lives.

Lori exemplifies the kindness, compassion, and exemplary clinical skills inherent in the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
