Our family was lucky enough to have Lisa be our sweet H's primary nurse at Children's Mercy. She was understanding and compassionate of our journey. She would listen to my anxieties, listen to me cry, ramble, laugh, and everything in between. Lisa would talk to H like she was her own child/grandchild.
As a nurse myself, I know how sometimes we can lose compassion at times, but never Lisa. She always had a smile on her face, even when I knew she had worked way too many days in a row, she always made us feel comfortable, and I never feared to leave my sweet baby in her hands. She is honestly the best nurse I have ever had the pleasure to meet. I learned from her, not only how to care for my preemie, but how to be a better nurse myself.
About two weeks after we were discharged, H contracted a viral infection and we were transported to Mercy. The nurse practitioner was to come down and see H and when Lisa found out it was us; she immediately came to the ER to check on us. She hugged my husband and me as we both cried in fear for our baby. She looked at H with such love, and us with such compassion. That interaction meant so much, when I think back, of course, she did that because that is who she is at her core. A caregiver, a truly beautiful soul, full of love and compassion to share with her patients and their families. H was so blessed to have Lisa as her primary nurse, and I am truly a better person and nurse for meeting and learning from Lisa. She is truly one of a kind.
