Lisa really helped make a difficult time a lot easier and helped C manage to cope with the prospect of another operation.
My 13-year-old daughter had to go to A&E as she’d hurt her big toe. After an X-ray in Minors, she was sent home with a Darco shoe and crutches, as it was fractured. My daughter found attending the hospital very upsetting, as she suffers from PTSD due to a previous major back operation at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital. She was called into the Paediatric Fracture Clinic the following day, as it was an open fracture.

At the hospital, we met Lisa who was taking the clinic.
I am so grateful for all her help. C had found just attending the hospital upsetting, but unfortunately, she was told she would need an operation, as there was a high risk of infection. After her previous experience, she refused any operation. She didn’t even want to come to the hospital. Lisa was so understanding and helpful. She spoke through it with her, explaining that it would be a small operation, and got the consultants to come in and speak to her about it. She let C have time to think and decide, so she felt she had control over what was happening to her. This helped C come to terms with the idea of having another operation and not panicking too much.

As C had had an operation in another hospital within a year, she also needed to provide a sample before her operation, which they hoped to do as soon as possible. It was difficult for me to get back to the hospital quickly, as it was my mother-in-law’s funeral the following day, and I also needed to attend church that evening. Lisa kindly dropped the sample kit through my door, to save me from needing to return to the hospital a second time that day. It was really appreciated and really kind of her.

There is never a good time to need an operation, but it was especially difficult due to the timing of my mother-in-law’s funeral, and as C was so upset by her previous operation. Lisa really helped make a difficult time a lot easier and helped C manage to cope with the prospect of another operation. I don’t think I would have got C to agree to it without her kindness and understanding.
