Where it was a tornado of chaos in our PICU room, she was the calm center that reset the mood.
My young daughter has a rare genetic epilepsy disorder that requires a versed drip to get seizure control. Unfortunately, when it comes to toddlers, the IVs constantly go, and to add more complexity, she is NOT an easy poke. Enter the Vascular Draw team… they make the process quicker and more efficient with less stress to a screaming 20-month-old. After 11 days of multiple IVs, Lilian informed us that we were down to only two decent veins, and we were headed toward the route of a PICC line. As we had this discussion, she was extremely kind and calm while discussing and doing a risk-benefit analysis on her existing veins and access. She was the one who had to break the news to us that our daughter was running out of access. It was not an easy conversation and she calmly and gently explained how she came to that conclusion. Subsequent discussions with our PICU team led us to a situation where our daughter ended up with no access prior to PICC placement and Lilian had to be called urgently. It was a room of panic; she came in and calmly assured us that she would try to get an IV into the last vein she knew of so my daughter could continue her versed drip. She managed to get it in without agitating my daughter and then we had a long discussion on risk disclosure of PICC line placement and the rare possibilities of complications. She advocated for our daughter and did a lot of pain management strategies throughout this period. Where it was a tornado of chaos in our PICU room, she was the calm center that reset the mood. Her leadership skills are impeccable along with her bedside manner of explaining the procedure down to technical nuances. It didn’t make it an easier decision to make at all as parents, but it was reassuring to know she was guiding this process. Lilian talked us calmly through, and advocated for all of us, all the while, she managed to go above and beyond in patient care and bedside manner. Thank you so, so much Lilian.
