Letty has provided this patient a gift of hope that there are good people out in the world.
I would like to recognize Letty Romero RN for showing compassion and care for a homeless patient with his dog.  The ED admitted a patient who has no family whom he has kept in contact with.  The patient was admitted for a suspicious tumor and he could not care for the dog.  The patient said that he was very sad and heartbroken because the dog has been his true best friend which has kept him going in life. Letty was informed that we were waiting for the Downey Animal Control to respond and pick up "C" the patient's dog but it had been a long 9 hours with no response.  Letty heard from the nurses that the patient was sad about leaving his dog and concerned he was going to the animal shelter.  Letty and I met with the patient and shared that she could foster "C" until he was feeling better and released.  "C" was taken in by Letty's family and they kept in touch with the patient along with providing him frequent updates on how "C" was doing.  She was adapting to sleeping indoors and enjoying time with the family.  The patient was released but he recognized he was not able to care for "C" like he wanted to.  Letty and her family met with the patient at a local park so that he could see "C" one last time because now the patient was going to a hospice care facility.  Letty has provided this patient a gift of hope that there are good people out in the world.  Thank you Letty for all that you do and for showing compassionate care for not just the patient but also his best friend, "C".
