Laura had a patient who was being transferred to her unit, but the transfer did not go well which left the patient quite upset. When Laura met her patient for the first time she was in tears. The next day Laura was off, but she couldn't stop thinking about her newly transferred patient. The emotional stress the patient was experiencing impacted Laura greatly, and she knew she had to do something to try and cheer up the patient. She called aid and assist on her day off and explained the situation. She indicated that she would not be returning to work for a few days, but felt the need to do something now to brighten the patient's day. At Laura's request, the patient received her favorite Earl Grey tea with an insulated cup, a cheery balloon, along with some reading material. Attached to all of this was a sweet note letting her know that her RN, Laura, was thinking of her, even on her day off. This time the patient's tears were tears of happiness and joy. This nurse was so caring, nurturing and thoughtful that she was thinking of her patient even on her day off and went above and beyond for her. Due to Laura's thoughtfulness, passion, empathy, love, and selflessness this patient had a better experience while in the hospital and had comfort knowing that someone was caring for her, even when she wasn't her RN that particular day.
