Krista Rinehart was assigned to a clinic in Community Health Nursing in a low socioeconomic area of the city. She discovered all she could about the neighborhood before the first assignment. She was aware of the housing, fast food with lack of healthy produce, cultural makeup and more. This was a tremendous help when taking care of the clients as she was already aware of the physical living conditions around the clinic and potential needs of those with appointments. She also talked about it with the staff who lived in the neighborhood to compare their perceptions.
Another assignment included doing a much more in-depth study of a neighborhood and she decided to continue on a journey in knowledge in the same neighborhood, seeking out information from the residents and their thoughts on healthy aspects of the area as well as what needed improvement. Her observations were very up to date and were founded on evidence based practice. The things she looked for were bicycle lanes , community gardens, and evidence of community watch programs, use of public transportation and more. These were topics not included in the text or rubric, but current issues in urban settings.
Krista also attended the school medical mission trip to Belize.
