He truly made one of the hardest times of my life a little easier to go through.
My mother was brought to the ICU at CarolinaEast Medical Center. During this time, she had been having a horrible time breathing and had to be put on a ventilator. She had pancreatic cancer and the chemo had wreaked havoc on her lungs. The doctors were trying to figure out what was going on and the best way to treat her. She ended up with one of the BEST nurses during her entire stay. I had already gone through the most while she was on another unit and just wanted her to feel at ease while she was already dealing with a lot. When I came in the first morning I instantly felt a difference. The entire vibe on the ICU was a different world. My mom was a little calmer and that was part of what was needed. Kolby came in and introduced himself and explained he would be the nurse working with my mom for the next few days. He explained to me how her night was and how she had been up to the time I got there. If I had any questions he answered every single one of them no matter how many or how long it took for me to understand. He always approached me and my mom with such a gentle and calm tone in his voice. If I had to leave I could call and check in and he never made me feel like it was a bother to him. When he had to move or adjust my mother in the bed or do anything for her he made sure to do so with ease. When it came time for decisions to be made about what to do next for my mom his explanations were clear and he still let me know everything without making it feel like it was the worst thing in the world, even though it would be changing my entire world. When all I wanted was for my mom to be taken care of and made me feel comfortable in her last days. Kolby made sure he did exactly that and went the extra mile to make sure I was good as well. He truly made one of the hardest times of my life a little easier to go through. I had other nurses that were all awesome. They seem to be made for this hall, for this job, and for the harder moments. Kolby happened to be the one I dealt with the most. He will be remembered for the outstanding care he gave my mom. Thank you to all of the ICU crew! Kolby was made for this type of care. I thank God for him.
