In April of 2018, my doctor found a mass on my thyroid. After an ultrasound, it was determined cancer could not be ruled out. At the age of 30, hearing the word "cancer" overwhelmed me. I wasn't ready to fight the battle. Anxiety was high as I awaited the call to schedule my biopsy. When the call came, the voice on the other end of the line was so calm, confident, reassuring; just what my anxious soul needed. She answered my many questions with words that showed compassion. She patiently listened to my fears. She spoke in terms that were appropriate to my knowledge and understanding, ensuring I would understand the procedure and what to expect before, during and after. I hung up the phone less anxious than before the call.
The day before my biopsy, again she called. She reminded me of my appointment and answered my last minute questions. I hung up the phone feeling ready for tomorrow. I finally met her on the morning of the biopsy. My mother came with me for moral support and to drive me home. She patiently explained the entire procedure and expectations again to ensure my mother understood. When it came time to begin preparing, she expertly placed my IV catheter with ease and very minimal pain. She covered me with warm blankets and helped me into the biopsy room. She was aware of my allergy and ensured the doctor knew that well. She never left me alone and made sure I was okay multiple times during the biopsy. Knowing I had her there somehow eased my mind.
In recovery, she expertly checked my vitals and ensured my bleeding was under control. Another warm blanket was perfect. She found my favorite channel on TV and brought me some juice. Her compassion and listening skills were on-point as she explained the process of how I would receive the results. I left the recovery room feeling I could handle whatever came.
But that wasn't the last time I would speak to her. She called me the next day, just to see how I was feeling. I know much of what I've mentioned is a nurse's job. However, her ability to speak directly to my educational level without making me feel inadequate is something special. Her ability to ease my fears with her compassion is exceptional! Her patience and listening skills are top-notch! To this patient, she is an incredible nurse who goes above and beyond! She will always be remembered when I look back on my medical journey!!
Note: Kim is also our first 5-pin nurse. We have only been a DAISY hospital for 1 year and she is already a 5-pin nurse and a DAISY Nurse. She is an outstanding nurse and is very loved.
