My son was admitted to 7N with RSV. After spending the majority of the night and next day in the ED waiting for a room, we arrived on the unit exhausted and overwhelmed. The next morning Kerri was assigned to our son. From the moment she entered the room, I knew she was going to turn this whole hospitalization around and get my son back to his normal, happy, healthy self. She immediately organized and cleaned the room and shared the plan of care for our son to try to get him feeling better sooner. Kerri demonstrated her knowledge of pediatrics and compassion in every aspect of care she gave our son. She changed the tape that was holding our son's oxygen tubing as it was pulling out his hair and irritating his skin. She helped us transition from breast to bottle feeding so he didn't have to work so hard to breathe. She provided us with a refrigerator to store pumped milk and taught me how to use the flexible oral suction so that I could clear his mucous more efficiently. Throughout the day, she not only cared for my son, but she also checked on my husband and me to make sure we were doing okay and to reassure us. It was like the sun came out from behind the clouds having Kerri as our nurse. Later in the shift, Kerri had to call a rapid response on our son as his clinical picture was worsening. She explained what was happening, why she made the call and reassured us that he would be okay. Being a nurse and having called rapid responses myself and knowing that one was called on my 5-month old son was overwhelming and scary. Kerri kept us calm and walked us through the process. I know that we are not the typical patient that Kerri cares for on a daily basis on this floor. If she cared so holistically for us with our son who was going to get better and go home, I can only imagine the amazing gift it is for her to take care of the little ones who make up her patient population normally. I'm sure that what she did for us was just everyday work for her. For us, it changed our whole experience. This was our son's first hospitalization experience and she gave us the plan we needed to get our son back to normal. We are so blessed and thankful to have had Kerri take care of our family.
