Two nurses, Kelsey Alston, LVN and Mireya Moreno, RN had a difficult message from a patient. One of the nurses called the patient and it started out as a medical problem. The patient was not feeling well and only wanted to speak to the Primary Care Provider. The patient disclosed that she lives in a senior living facility. As the conversation went on, the patient told the nurse that she was extremely depressed and wanted to end her life by overdosing on her medications. The nurses were alarmed and sprang into action. The patient would not disclose her exact location. One of the nurses started googling senior living facilities and she was able to locate the patient's facility. During this time the other nurse was trying to keep the patient on the phone. This all went on for about 45 minutes. Once they finally got in touch with the facility, they asked for a welfare check and eventually felt it was necessary to call 911. The nurses stayed on the phone with the patient until paramedics arrived. They were reassured that someone was there to help her.
Both nurses went above and beyond and literally did everything they could to save this patient's life.
