Katie is an amazing leader, nurse, and person. There are no words that will explain how kind and compassionate she is to our oncology patients and their families. Besides being a tremendous leader, she has truly trained most of the nurses on our unit and has instilled a level of professionalism that SCU is known for. I can think of countless times as a new nurse in a tough situation thinking, "What would Katie do?" She has taught me to always stop and think about the patient lying in the bed and to treat every one of my patients like my loved one. At the beginning of this year, she faced the same diagnosis that our patients face- Cancer. Through weekly chemotherapy treatments, she continues to come in with a smile on her face and a let's do it attitude. She is always asking, what can she do for us to make our shift easier. She maintains all her job duties and does them with perfection. Beyond that, she goes above and beyond the call of duty and has used this difficult diagnosis to make a special connection with our patients. She provides them with a comfort and hope that they need and always seems to know what they need before they do. She gives them that simple hug or holds that hand and reassures them that it is going to be okay. I know I don't just speak for myself when I say that Katie has shown me what being humble, compassionate, and patient really means. She also has shown me the technical side of how to properly run a code situation or how to safely administer chemotherapy treatments. I truly thank her for her continuous dedication to our unit, the oncology patients, doctors, and nurses.
