Kat will always be known as my mom's cheerleader.
My mom was transferred to MUSC recently. I have stayed in a lot of hospitals with my mom during many of her illnesses over the last 20 years and I've never in my life met a nurse like Kat Scheels. Kat is one of a kind for many reasons. Kat was so willing to explain everything to me and my dad. She didn't mind the questions we asked and explaining things. Also, something that really stood out to me is that I feel like a lot of time some nurses are just doing what they are supposed to and Kat went out of her way in many different cases to inform the doctors of something that alarmed her about my mom. Which ultimately led to my mom getting better and out of harm's way. One of those examples was her swallowing; Kat was concerned and mentioned to the doctors and they looked into things to make sure she was swallowing things the right way.

Kat was my mother's biggest cheerleader next to her family. My mom had a test and was really scared and worried about it and Kat was so encouraging to her and even went with her down to the test to comfort her and make her feel better. I'm telling you, especially in times like this with COVID-19 and some patients not being able to have visitors, Kat sure does make a patient feel at home and loved. A lot of people think it's only about the PHYSICAL needs of a patient but MENTAL is a huge piece also. Kat is great at treating the physical and mental of a patient.

Kat was so good at showing the nursing students things and explaining things to them. She took her time and did a great job explaining things to them and answering any questions that they had. Also, I noticed Kat interacting with her coworkers, other nurses, and even doctors and they all seemed to really like her. I could go on and on about other things that Kat did but I think you get the picture. My mom had several really good nurses at MUSC during her stay. However, Kat had something different about her that stood out. I hope that Kat knows how much she meant to my mom and especially my family. For those of my family that couldn't be here to visit her, it made them feel better when I told them how good of a nurse Kat was to her. Kat will always be known as my mom's cheerleader. We may never see Kat again but she will always hold a place in our hearts of how she was to our family and especially to my mom. This world could use more nurses like Kat!
