Karri used her amazing assessment skills to safely facilitate admission to UVA Children's.
Karri was conducting a routine developmental follow-up telemedicine visit and quickly noted that the young girl was exhibiting respiratory distress. The little girl had recently been decannulated a couple of days prior. Telemedicine is often difficult to perform a thorough physical examination, but Karri has exceptional assessment skills and was able to pick up on subtle differences in the child's exam included changes in breathing pattern and decreased energy level compared to previous encounters. The mother confirmed the symptoms.

Karri quickly utilized her resources and notified additional subspecialty team members (PICU, complex care, ENT, pulm). Karri used her amazing assessment skills to safely facilitate admission to UVA Children's. The little girl was admitted and ultimately required her tracheostomy to be replaced. A routine developmental telemedicine visit turned into a visit that honestly saved this little girls life. She likely would have decompensated at home and on admission she did decompensate (PERT CALLED) requiring PICU transfer. If Karri did not respond in a timely fashion and was not persistent in encouraging the little girl and her mother to come to UVA for evaluation (they live over 1 1/2 hours away) the story could have ended differently.

Karri is an excellent nurse practitioner and team player. She demonstrated effective communication and persistence in this scenario that resulted in the best outcome for this little girl. Although the tracheostomy needed to be replaced. She is now back at home and happy. The family is thankful for Karri's services.
