I work on 5 Central and have recently been floating to Rapid Response. I want to make you aware of a situation that took place recently. I was called to asses a gentleman on your unit, 7 Central. At this time, I met with Karl Simon and another nurse, who were at the patient's bedside. The patient was in respiratory distress at the time and they were providing continuous calm, cool, and collected care. The physician responded to the room and wanted to move the patient to a higher level of care for BIPAP. At this time, both nurses explained to me and to the provider that the patent was a DNR/DNI and that the family had been discussing CMO status. The provider did still want to move the patient, at which point, Karl stated, "The patient has a MOLST, and it says no to noninvasive ventilation." This prompted a different set of events. This prevented this patient from moving to a higher level of care in the last moments of his life. He would not have made the travel. Karl was not the patient's nurse; he was coming to the aid of his colleague and he stuck with her through the entire event, helping her, helping the team, and ultimately, helping the patient carry out his clearly-stated wishes in his dying moments. This, in my opinion, is equal to saving a life. Karl should be recognized for his dedication, attentiveness to details, compassion, and support of team members. The last moments of this man's life would have been much different had it not been for Karl and his colleague.
