Under Juliet’s special care, her patient felt safe, and respected. Out of sincere appreciation for Juliet, the patient wrote these words about her experience at Valley Presbyterian Hospital.
“Juliet made me feel safe and cared for, when I was hospitalized for a kidney stone. She is the example of an ideal nurse. Her sweet and caring personality, smile, and tone of voice made me feel valued and important. Juliet’s presence calmed me. Juliet constantly checked on my needs throughout the night and went the extra mile. She brought me ice cream and graham crackers as well as my pain medications. She is everything an excellent nurse should be. She is a role model for other nurses to follow! I hope she is assigned to care for me again, it will be like seeing a good friend who truly cares for me.”
By definition, compassion is an inherent quality or trait that enables a nurse to discern a need, provide comfort and help a patient feel safe and valued. Juliet served as an exemplar of this type of genuine compassion. She was acknowledged by this grateful patient for emulating the following DAISY attributes:
Making special connection
Collaborating to meet their unique needs
Going above and beyond the “call of duty”
Providing individualized, compassionate care
Living out the hospital vision of excellence.
