She recognized the immediate signs of concern, turmoil, and fear. She met me where I was and literally slowed everything down. She just sat and talked with me.
I arrived to have Mohs Surgery as a result of basal cell carcinoma. To many, this was not a big deal, but to me, it was. I was terrified, but more importantly, beyond sad due to the recent loss of my father to cancer. For some reason, entering that operating room brought back the many experiences with my dad’s journey, and it was all just a lot. I was feeling it all and starting to crumble. Things shifted when I met Julie Anderson, who would oversee my procedure and follow-up. She recognized the immediate signs of concern, turmoil, and fear. She met me where I was and literally slowed everything down. She just sat and talked with me. She put the human element into context and helped me move through the moment I was having by assuring me that I was in the best possible place someone with this could be, that I would be attended to by the best possible doctor in this field, and that she heard me, saw me, and would make sure it all went the way it was intended. She validated every one of my overly intricate questions. The shift in my worry happened because of her, and it was because of her that I was able to feel what it is like to be truly cared about and cared for. She is exactly what any human being would hope they would be with on this icky journey in our lives. Thank you, Julie, and thank you to Essentia for taking the time to recognize the humans who do the work and help us choose where to go when we are experiencing a health crisis or issue.
