It was my fourth day rounding on this 95 year-old patient who was in the process of dying and had elected to have comfort measures only the day before. Her only son was her only relative and he was having a very hard time with his mother dying and was not able to emotionally tolerate staying with her. I came to see her again around 9 AM and Judy, who had worked the night before and cared for this patient, was still there, sitting at bedside holding the patient's hand, until we could find a patient companion to stay with her so she would not die alone. Judy, who had also cared for other patients the night before, had also done all her charting throughout that shift from the patient's room, so that she would have someone with her as much as possible, and even stayed beyond her working hours to comfort the patient.
