Ms. Ackerson will do anything to provide the best experience for the Veterans and the employees.
Ms. Ackerson has always put the Veterans first. She embodies the spirit of innovation, caring, respect, and mentorship. She demonstrates innovation by bringing in new technology to keep staff and Veterans safe. Cincinnati was the first VA to have Avasys. Avasys is “a remote patient observation system” that allows audio and visual monitoring for patients at risk for safety events. It also is used as a safety device for staff who are sitting with potentially violent patients. Avasys has helped prevent patients from falling and pulling out necessary lines. The virtual watcher alerted other staff when a sitter was in a potentially dangerous situation. Ms. Ackerson also introduced AcuStaf to the facility. This is the scheduling software that allows employees to self-schedule, offers real-time Nursing hours per unit, and helps managers balance schedules. Ms. Ackerson is currently the Chief Health Informatics Officer, paving the way for the Cerner project.

Not only does Ms. Ackerson care about the veterans, but she also cares for the employees. Many have come to her with personal problems, and she has lent her ear. She won’t give you the answer, but she will certainly help you walk through the solution. Ms. Ackerson has been a mentor to many, I have heard her many times ask staff where do they want to be in five years, what type of education do they need to get to their goal? How can I help you get there? Ms. Ackerson’s door has been opened to many new and experienced managers. They have come to her with questions, issues with staff, or have an idea they need to work through. Ms. Ackerson shows/teaches/supports them through the process, educating them all the way. Ms. Ackerson also teaches for Northern Kentucky University health informatics. Many of the students have asked about the best way to get into the world of healthcare informatics. Ms. Ackerson has provided ideas and guided them to areas that most interest the students.

Ms. Ackerson will do anything to provide the best experience for the Veterans and the employees. I have yet to hear her say no to a request or an opportunity to grow herself or others. She is one of those leaders who seem to lead by example.
