Jocelyn is one of those people who is always ready to help the next one, a true team player. It was not different when recently she was asked to lead a large Intensive Care Unit (ICU) team of eighty staff, bridging from charge nurse role to Acting Head Nurse.
This was terrifying for Jocelyn, but she embraced the challenge to help the unit in a difficult moment. Jocelyn has demonstrated her leadership at the bedside first and transferred it during this temporary period. As someone who is a true patient advocate, she always ensures the competency of the nursing staff while coaching and mentoring. As a colleague working alongside Jocelyn she has taken on the responsibility and has been fair, consistent and very patient in dealing with all the colleagues.
The ICU can be a very stressful area for patients and their relatives. Jocelyn ensures she is always available at visiting time to answer any questions and update family members on their relative's condition. Her soft skills are outstanding and her actions help to relieve fears and reassure the relatives that the patient is being well cared for by competent staff. She is continuously striving for improvement of patient care. Her experience as a frontline nurse is very obvious when making leadership decisions. She has handled the transition in this period with dignity and extreme compassion for patients and staff.
Jocelyn constantly leads by example and reminds all the staff, myself included, to think of the patient, not the machine. For all this, I believe she truly is a DAISY Nurse.
