Jerry's compassion could be seen in his eyes, always making sure that I was comfortable. The concern he exhibited was so genuine, knowing my pain and my time were so short.
Every once in a while you find a nurse who really makes a difference during your hospital stay, and that exact scenario happened today. Jerry came at 7 am to my room introducing himself as my RN for the day. He had the kindness of an RN that had been doing his job for some time, and this was not even his usual floor. That reassignment would be my benefit as Jerry would be my biggest advocate all day. When I needed anything, Jerry was there. Never having to utilize the call button, because Jerry had my orders memorized and would be in my room when an antibiotic was done or other medication.

But what Jerry did that was so extremely important today was he made sure I was never in discomfort, as I am a patient on palliative care. His compassion could be seen in his eyes, always making sure that I was comfortable. The concern he exhibited was so genuine, knowing my pain and my time were so short. Each day since being on Palliative Care has been a struggle to keep as pain-free as I could. Bone cancer brings with it debilitating discomfort, but I had Jerry in my corner. His concern for me could never have been better done. His steadfast work ethic made him make sure every last medication he administered to me was identified and checked. This was done each and every time before he would give it to me and was so well done. I do not see this often, but Jerry would check everything making my safety his #1 concern. I could never have been assigned to an RN that cared about me more than Jerry. His kindness was just so genuine. I see Jerry moving up to management, and he will be an excellent addition to NYP’s administration. Jerry’s demeanor and ability to listen, are the patient’s #1 resource and he is just so very special.

I believe Jerry belongs in a position that was made just for him. That is to be an RN who teaches new nurses how listening is so very important. For example, the patient needs someone on their side when the diagnosis is not good. Someone who can sit down and talk with them and listen as well. Jerry should have that position made just for him. The patients would be the beneficiary of this new type of nursing. I hope you think about Jerry's ability to fill those shoes of a new position. To end, when a patient is educated and has this resource available, listening to them helps gets them by these rough times
