I recently admitted a relatively stable patient to Jay's unit. I rounded on the patient in the morning and noted that he was stable through the night during my rounds. Jay called later in the morning to ask if we could check the patient's labs more frequently. Based on her clinical judgment she felt the patient's status was changing and asked if she could check his H&H at least every 12 hours.

Jay notified me shortly after that that the patient's lab results and vital signs showed the patient to be actively bleeding. I am so thankful for Jay's persistence, professionalism and dedication to her patient. She went above and beyond to act quickly on the patient's status and notify me of the patient's condition. This patient received multiple interventions after I arrived in the unit to see the patient including drips, blood products, a transfer to the ICU and during the night following these interventions a transfer to another facility for emergent surgical interventions.

Jay's critical thinking skills, efficiency with pulling together the needed resources (in a small community setting), and quick response, the patient received the fast and critcal care that he needed.

Jay's call saved this patient's life. I have known Jay for several years and she is an exceptional nurse and fully deserves the DAISY Award.
