Overall, I think society views Labor and Delivery as warm and fuzzy, rainbows and sunshine. And overall it is - we celebrate life every day. But more often than we'd like, we face death on Labor and Delivery. We walk with moms and dads as they grieve, as they say goodbye to their sweet babies. Jen assisted with one such delivery where the patient knew her baby would not be in the baby carrier on the car ride home. Jen sat with her patiently as she admitted her and her husband to our unit. She gently walked her through decisions no parent wants to face of how to handle the remains of their child. Then Jen handed off the patient to me to care for. It was more than evident that the patient and Jen had made a special connection in this difficult situation. The patient and I went back for her procedure and afterward the doctor informed me they were unable to obtain handprint/footprint mementos for the parents. Jen checked in with me on how our patient was doing and I mentioned in passing the lack of mementos. As my patient was being wheeled off the unit for discharge, Jen came with two small cards containing tiny precious footprints! A truly irreplaceable gift! Jen went above and beyond. It's easy to become cold and calloused to death when you see it so very often, but despite her many years of RN experience, Jen put the patient first.
