She pulled her out of her cave. Jen showed her she was worthy and capable. She (Jen) does this for countless patients. It's who she is as a nurse. Caring, compassionate, thoughtful, encouraging, creative, energetic, and the list goes on.
We had been taking care of a patient on CVIU for nearly 2 months. This was one of several admissions to the unit for this patient. But this admission she faced a life altering amputation. S was a young woman in their 40s who did not handle this change very well (understandably). She had been very depressed, not eating, and sleeping all day. She stopped doing any self care and did not interact with staff at all. Jen made it her mission to turn this patient around. It started with her hair. She spent hours picking out 50 days' worth of matted hair. She washed and braided it all the while encouraging the patient to start doing more for herself. She got her out of the bed which many had been unable to do. And by the end of that day, she got a smile from the patient. It sounds like nothing, but this was a HUGE deal. The next day, Jen brought a nail file, clippers, and her own nail polish to give to the patient. Again, she got her up, encouraged her to feed and care for herself, and helped her do a simple but invaluable task with the patient. She pulled her out of her cave. Jen showed her she was worthy and capable. She (Jen) does this for countless patients. It's who she is as a nurse. Caring, compassionate, thoughtful, encouraging, creative, energetic, and the list goes on. Jen brought this patient from a very dark sad place to the light, and she deserves all the recognition. The patient went home on Jen's 3rd day. She had been slated to go to a nursing home, but Jen's tireless care and attention gave this patient what she needed to recover her body and spirit. We all deserve a nurse like Jen.
