My son was transferred from DCH in Tuscaloosa to Birmingham Children's ED after having a fever from an unknown source and an abnormal abdominal X-ray. He was just 4 weeks old at the time, and let me add he's our first child. So I was already a mess coming in after having watched him being poked and prodded at the Tuscaloosa ER and not knowing what was wrong.

Jennifer was so sweet and caring toward our little guy. When her shift started he had already been through so much including one unsuccessful lumbar puncture, and the next doctor on shift was getting ready to attempt the procedure again. I knew I couldn't stay with him; I cried and broke down when he had to have his IV line replaced as the other had slipped out during his ride over. I didn't want to be a distraction to anyone either. The best compliment I could give Jennifer is that I was able to leave and not feel as though I was abandoning him because I knew she was there with him, she could mother him through what I couldn't. I knew someone in the room saw him as more than a patient, but almost as her own son. That gave me the peace of mind to walk out and let the team do what needed to be done. When I returned, she had him in her arms, swaddled and sound asleep. She's amazing and her heart and compassion made this horrible day a little less so. We ended up leaving that day as our baby boy's results all came back clear and his fever was gone.

I hope I never have to come back to this beautiful hospital, but it's great to know that you all have such an amazing group of individuals like Jennifer that make such scary and hard situations a little easier for not just the children but really for their parents as well. She was such an angel and I believe she deserves some recognition for going above and beyond (in our eyes at least.) I'm sure to her it was just another day, that speaks to her heart more than anything and how perfect she is for what she does. Thank you for providing us with such a wonderful nurse in Jennifer.
