Janet is a caring nurse that always puts the needs of her patient first. A recent example is when a patient experienced an anaphylactic reaction to an undetermined cause while in the OR, and subsequently was unwell and unable to follow discharge instructions. The spouse was updated but seemed confused after Janet shared the discharge instructions. Concerned about the spouse’s understanding, Janet asked the RN making the post-op follow-up call to make sure all the information/instructions would be relayed.

When the follow-up RN contacted the patient, it turned out he was not aware of the incident, the need to see his PCP within 3 days, or the surgery in 2 weeks, and an appointment was scheduled appropriately. Janet’s forethought ensured the patient received the necessary attention from his PCP regarding the investigation of the anaphylactic reaction. In addition, her keen observation skills may have prevented this patient’s procedure from being canceled when he arrived for his pending surgery in two weeks.
