She's very open to suggestions and will regularly ask the staff about what's working or not in the unit and how to make things better. She's very supportive of the staff and motivates them to be the best versions of themselves.
Jane Norris came to Parkland during the Covid pandemic and with changes in the organizational chart. MICU, which used to be under the Medicine Department, is now under the Surgical Services. That was also the time that a lot of nurses were leaving for much higher-paying jobs as travel nurses. This didn't stop Ms. Norris from doing the best that she can.

She adjusted to her new position very quickly. She makes herself visible, readily available to the staff 24/7. She definitely has an open-door policy. She holds one-to-one meetings with the staff, especially during the performance evaluation period. She had worked night shifts to make herself more familiar with the night shift staff.

She holds monthly meetings at different times, at least a couple of days,  in different ways so as to reach as many staff as possible. She holds them in person at change of shift with Webex options for those not on duty. She then sends out the minutes of the meeting to the staff via work email. There's a weekly ICU update that the outgoing charge nurse reads (from Wednesday morning till Tuesday night) during change of shift huddles. Another way she disseminates information is through Team group chat.

She's a very compassionate, caring person and a good listener. We lost a young coworker in July 2021  and another one last month. She was very instrumental in holding beautiful, well-attended memorial services for both.

She's very open to suggestions and will regularly ask the staff about what's working or not in the unit and how to make things better. She's very supportive of the staff and motivates them to be the best versions of themselves. She's very proactive and has a positive attitude. She acknowledges Employees of the Month at the change of shift and sends out emails whenever a nurse passed the CCRN or any certifications.

MICU is the largest ICU in the hospital with high patient acuity. But under the leadership of Ms. Norris, it can easily be compared to well-oiled machinery.

I hope that Ms. Norris gets the recognition that she deserves as a great leader. I firmly believe that she is so deserving of the DAISY Nurse Leader Award.
