It is difficult to pick just one instance in which Jamie fits the DAISY nominee "criteria." Any normal person will, at some point in time, meet a given amount of nurses. When you meet nurses as much as we have, it gets very easy to be able to tell which nurses you would want to treat your little brother and which you would rather not. Jamie most definitely is one that we want again and again.
When you are stuck in a room together, for months on end, especially when it was the waiting game of our lives, you are going to get on one another's' nerves. And whether we wanted to or not, my brother and I had a few arguments during our stay here. On more than one occasion, Jamie sat with us, listened to both, saw that we acknowledged one another, and asked what our feelings were. She was just a mom about the whole situation - she mediated our arguments, helped us both see things from the others' perspective, and finally came to a resolution.
It is rather comforting when there's someone who cares for you when your own parent cannot. She can also make us laugh so much our sides hurt, all the while, we feel very safe when with her. Not to mention, she is beyond kind. She is very deserving of our trust. One should be so lucky to be able to say they have been graced by her presence. It is nurses like Jamie Peckens that inspire and motivated me to pursue a career in nursing. Thank you.

Jamie is an incredible nurse. She continuously goes above and beyond for patients and their families. Recently, Jamie cared for a patient who did not (and could not) have family at the bedside. This six-year-old had experienced horrific abuse and neglect and came to our unit fearful, not speaking, and barely able to move.
Jamie spent two shifts providing consistent and gentle care for this frightened little boy. She built trust with him so that he felt safe and cared for, and she set the stage for him to know that other staff would also take care of him and help him heal. He learned her name, one of the first things he consistently said, and tender care she initially provided for him allowed him to blossom throughout his stay.
"Jamie, I want pizza," a four-word sentence, was celebrated high and low by all practitioners working with this brave little boy. We are so grateful that Jamie was working on this patient's first two days on our unit, as her interactions with him catapulted his healing and trust of PCH staff from the very beginning. She embodies everything the DAISY Award strives to recognize in an amazing nurse!
