A patient came to us from the ED who needed emergency surgery. The patient did not have a working IV when he arrived to pre-op. Several attempts were made to start an IV without success, including anesthesiology, ultrasound, and our best IV staff. After 2 hours a request was made for a PICC or Midline insertion. The MD was informed that no one was here to do the insertion and that no one would be called in. Ida was the House Supervisor that evening and was informed of the patient's needs. She made several phone calls for assistance and finally called us back with a solution. An ICU nurse would come down and insert a PICC line. Teresa Q arrived soon after and adeptly inserted the PICC line. Teresa left her patients in the care of another ICU nurse to help us out. Teresa and Ida both came to our rescue and saved the patient from further sticks and pain. His surgery was successful and he was grateful for the help of both. Thank you for being the solution we needed to care for a patient.
