My two boys needed me that day because they were losing their pop-pop. We needed to be together, and if it weren’t for Ian giving me the confidence to leave and allowing me to trust that he would talk to my dad and be gentle and kind, I wouldn’t have left.
After a quick bout of cancer, my otherwise healthy, 80-year-old father was admitted to the ICU. It happened to be the day before my son’s 7th birthday. Ian not only took wonderful care of my dad, but he also looked after me. We communicated so easily and were together for 2 full days. He asked what my dad goes by and called him that instead of his formal first name, he shaved his face for me, asked to see pictures, asked about my kids - and since my dad was sedated and quickly moved to hospice, he and I talked a lot since I wasn’t able to talk to my dad. He seemed like an old childhood friend, but we had just met under terrible conditions. Most importantly, he encouraged me to go home (1 hour away) and be with my son on his birthday, and I did. I was able to do that because I knew 100% that Ian would care for my dad and treat him with respect! My two boys needed me that day because they were losing their pop-pop. We needed to be together, and if it weren’t for Ian giving me the confidence to leave and allowing me to trust that he would talk to my dad and be gentle and kind, I wouldn’t have left. I am thankful that he encouraged me to go home and see my husband and two boys! That helped our entire family.
