My mother was hospitalized in February. I came into her room and noticed her color was off and she seemed more fatigued and sluggish. Gina came in and I shared my concerns with her. She was admitted for a severe UTI and was getting better until the changes on Saturday. Gina said she noticed a decline herself, so she checked vitals and a couple of her vitals were off so she contacted the ER doctor. He suggested to watch her and he would try to get over to take a look at her. It was her persistence and concern with checking mom's heart rate every 15 to 20 minutes and then catching her lowering blood pressure. All of the things she took upon herself to monitor essentially saved Mom's life. As the evening unfolded, Mom ended up vomiting when we put her into bed just before shift change. Gina continued her diligent care and stayed past her shift to ensure and to be an extra pair of hands for my mom. The next nurse took vital history to the ER doctor and he ordered an EKG which I mentioned Gina had suggested might be a good idea hours earlier. The EKG showed discrepancies which resulted in going to Des Moines. Upon arrival to Des Moines, we learned my mother had suffered a heart attack at the time she vomited. A silent heart attack none the less, with no pain or symptoms. She received a stent and pacemaker. Gina's compassion and diligence and persistence to act on a vital that wasn't normal. Because of her caring and gentle nature and willingness to listen to my concerns and to not just look for obvious signs of distress, she was a huge part of saving my mom's life. Hats off to a diligent and exceptional nurse going above and beyond. Thank you, Gina!
