Emma was my son C's nurse the entire weekend and Monday and Tuesday of our journey to organ donation. C was fatally injured. Our family was devastated and not sure how we were going to make it through the process of saying goodbye. Emma walked us through with her compassion and dedication to "exceptional care" as Sanford's mission statement is lived out through her. She did extra special things like shaving him and putting on deodorant and cologne. We felt like C was part of her family.
Emma took time to explain things to us and answer donation questions within her scope of practice. The thing that stood out the most to us was how she interacted with the hundreds of people who came to say goodbye, filling his room, and yet did her job to meet C's needs. Emma followed us through to the very end, even when there was a delay in his donor surgeons coming due to weather. She stayed beyond her shift to see us through and say goodbye. Words on paper can't describe the gratitude we have for Emma and her dedication to her job in the critical care unit!
