Ella immediately recognized the severity of the situation and sprung into action. She called out for help from the charge nurse and quickly gathered the extra supplies and instrumentation we needed on the field.
Emergencies don’t happen often in the operating room, but when they do, things can very quickly become a life-or-death situation, and even a seasoned nurse can be caught off guard. I was the scrub nurse in one of those situations this week, and my circulating nurse was a brand-new nurse in her first week out of orientation. A routine surgery suddenly became an emergency, and we couldn’t get control of an arterial bleeder. Our patient decompensated, and within minutes, her blood pressure was in the 40s systolic. Ella immediately recognized the severity of the situation and sprung into action. She called out for help from the charge nurse and quickly gathered the extra supplies and instrumentation we needed on the field. Amid all the action of the extra personnel in the room, all the noise, and all the needs, Ella remained calm and stayed focused, listening for the frequent urgent requests from the surgical field. In short, she did exactly what she was supposed to do. Ella’s ability to recognize and react to a patient's status change, remain calm, and work seamlessly with her teammates during a crisis deserves recognition. What makes Ella’s case more deserving of recognition, I believe, is the fact that she performed like a seasoned nurse who routinely experiences this type of emergency. As one of your preceptors, I am so proud of you. As one of your teammates, I am grateful to be able to work alongside you, and on behalf of our patient, I thank you. Well done, Ella!
