Diann was my primary preceptor in the MICU. Each and every day Diann exemplified the qualities of an exceptional nurse. Each day she cemented her character in excellent patient care, building teamwork, and loving her profession. Diann was so kind as a preceptor, gently helping me find my way as an ICU nurse. She respected that I have three years of floor experience and never let me feel inadequate.
Diann was working on a nurse-driven program for MICU patients with two other colleagues. She firmly believes that nurses should be utilized to their fullest extent of training and education. She has regular input on the MICU monthly meetings and wants to improve the way nurses work. She advocates for her colleagues and believes in education and gaining knowledge. She impressed me every day by consulting on BJH policy and procedures as well as current research articles online.
Whenever a patient was sedated, intubated, trached, or just needed reassurance, Diann would always be there from the beginning letting the patient know that they were safe. From that moment on, patients and their families would breathe a sigh of relief knowing that their advocate would care for them. Diann is an inclusive nurse and wants everyone to know they are welcomed. She instilled in me the drive to be a strong MICU nurse, to never skip the details, to always leave the situation better than it was in the beginning, and to help patients advance each shift. These are her values.
One family was struggling with the comfort care and impending passing of their loved one. Diann stopped from her numerous tasks and sat with the family. She held hands, hugged, and listened to their worries. Through her compassionate care, Diann helped this family cope more effectively so that when the time came the family was able to let their family member go peacefully.
Diann's type of nursing does not happen in one day. This nursing skill is honed over time. Diann has been a nurse for over twenty years. She has given so much of herself. She has offered to pray with me and other nurses before each shift to help us in our daily work. Diann is an extraordinary person and a true DAISY Nurse!
