When I receive a call from triage and it is Diane's patient I never hesitated to call her because she will take care of it whether she is off or not.
It might not be known but Diane has gone to so many visits on her time off because she usually states “I better go do this visit as I know you will not find someone else to go.” Also, she has made calls to patients on her off time. When I receive a call from triage and it is her patient I never hesitated to call her because she will take care of it whether she is off or not and she NEVER tells me the union does not allow for her to deliver care at any time. One night she went to see a patient as I explained to her that the wife was crying and upset. She went to make the visit and the patient died a few hours later. I remember calling her back that day to tell her that she made a difference with the visit and she would say yeah yeah yeah… anytime. Diane is very professional when it comes to her patients. As I say, I would call her whether she is working or not, and sometimes she would be at a basketball game with her kids and she would take 2 minutes to discuss a case or give an update as I would be sending another nurse. I have also asked her why she works as a runner and also she works every Saturday night as a runner and she would say to me “they don’t have anyone else to do it”. Diane has told me numerous times that this is the best job she ever had in her lifetime and even now she is promoted, her passion to provide care to patients at home remains so strong in her heart that she is still making visits and working as a runner. Diane has been working like that for years here at VNA and I think she should be commended for her dedication to the team, her passion to provide quality care to patients, her teamwork spirit, her professionalism, and she holds the values of VNA to deliver comfort care to patients. Diane is a true nurse, a real nurse whose compassion is a great asset to the team and to the patients she cares for. She definitely has gone above and beyond so many times as a nurse here at VNA.
