My dad was admitted for a revision of his total hip replacement. He was brought to B3W the evening of his surgery.
He had been very anxious about this procedure and the recovery process. Denise was his nurse on Friday and was wonderful. She was kind and compassionate. I know that she had a full census of patients, but took the time to talk to me twice by telephone regarding his care. As a PA in the ED, I know that taking the time to make phone calls to patients' families can be time-consuming and difficult. It was much appreciated, by me as well as my family, who were all anxiously awaiting news about his status.
She was very helpful in getting him discharged as well. He, unfortunately, was having some urinary retention and needed to void before being discharged and was understandably unhappy and anxious about possibly having to stay or be discharged with a foley. She was reassuring and was patient with him. She spent time talking with him about vacations and other non-medical topics that I'm sure helped to relax him and make him more comfortable. He was ultimately able to be discharged that evening as planned. Although he doesn't want to have to return, her care made the hospital stay not just tolerable, but nearly pleasant!
It made me proud to know that he was receiving such great care at a place that I've worked for 26 years. I am grateful that Denise was there to care for my father, not just for his surgical post-op care, but for the emotional care, she provided that probably helped him even more!
