We had a patient who was admitted for a bowel obstruction from a rehab center, she was there because she had a stroke. The 2 shifts prior to Demi coming on, the nurses said she had been very challenging. Demi always approaches her patients with an open mind and a clean slate. Initially, the patient was somewhat rude, however, Demi approached her in a different manner, trying to understand why she was so upset and angry. Throughout the day the patient seemed to calm down and at the end of Demi's shift, she went in the patient's room, sat on her bed and spent over an hour just talking. She found out the woman's husband left her and her two children when the kids were very young and she had worked 2-3 jobs for many years to care for her children. Her daughter moved out of state and doesn't come home much. Prior to her stroke, she was looking for an assisted living facility with her son. She was with her son when she had the stroke, "she went to the hospital and her son and family went on vacation". She felt completely alone and afraid. During her time with Demi, they cried and laughed and Demi got to know the real person. That night, the patient was completely different, I believe knowing someone did care. The next Demi came to work with pancakes and an orchid for the patient - two of her favorites she had found out from their discussion the night before. That day the patient was discharged back to rehab with a smile on her face caring for her orchid. She had eaten her pancakes too! Not only did Demi provide excellent care to this patient, but I truly believe she made a difference in her life!
