Coming to the hospital is very stressful for our families. During one specific admission, David was preparing to admit an infant with an extensive history. The admission was coming late in the day and the parents were upset about coming and nervous that they were not being admitted to an area they were familiar with. When the patient arrived, David began the admission process with a welcoming, friendly manner. In addition to assessing his patient, charting, and initiating orders, David took time to talk to the mother and build a rapport with her. He sought out her concerns, addressed them, and within a short amount of time, he had her laughing and enjoying herself.

David is always positive and upbeat, and his personality attracts others to him. David demonstrated excellence that day that exemplifies nursing. He had had a long busy shift and was exhausted. He had received report regarding the psychosocial aspect of the family that indicated this would not be an enjoyable experience. Regardless, he went in the room ready to change the perception of the family and make their stay amazing. He was so successful that the family requested his continued presence and left with a positive patient/family experience.

This is the image of nursing that helps bring honor to our profession. They may not remember the medications or the pain, but they will remember the nurse that made them laugh and made their stay better.
