I would like to nominate one of your nurses for a DAISY Award: Danielle, RN.
I ABSOLUTELY could not have had better care, especially in the immediate post-op period. Danielle was not only attentive to every need, but she demonstrated excellent problem-solving skills and anticipated and helped me with physical issues before they became more problematic. She continually asked about my level of pain, the presence of nausea, figured out that the O2 sat monitor gave more accurate information on my middle finger instead of my index finger, brought a spirometer, showed me how to use it and how often. She gave frequent reminders to use the spirometer, drink water, and made sure I was eating a bit (my diet was quite limited due to the surgical procedure performed). She administered all medications in a timely fashion; IV Zofran, morphine and Tylenol to keep me as comfortable as possible.
I have a problem with chronic neck pain and lying on my back for several hours of surgery aggravated this issue. I ended up with sharp pain along the entire left side of my neck. Danielle brought a special, very soft pillow that I could easily manipulate to support my head and chin so that my neck was not as painful. At the times that I did not require her active intervention, she would come to check on me to see how I was doing. She even accompanied me to the bathroom. And she fixed my phone when my nephew called reporting he'd had problems getting several calls through.
In all of my interactions with her, and during all of the time Danielle spent with me, she was smiling, pleasant and cheerful. At no time did I feel she was rushing and had multiple other things to do. Danielle is a truly extraordinary nurse. As a now many years retired RN myself, I was taught that my role was to meet every need of the patient with the highest standards of care, no matter what. I followed that model of care throughout my almost 40-year career. I believe Danielle is carrying on that tradition, unfortunately, not too often seen in today's world. Before her shift ended, Danielle informed me that she would be off the next day and then I did not see her again until the day I was discharged. She explained that she had been doing charge nurse responsibilities. But she came to see me that day to wish me well. The very fact that she took time out of her busy day to do this was extremely thoughtful and heart-warming. And her doing so only emphasizes even more what a caring and outstanding nurse she is.
I sincerely hope that Crouse Hospital is aware of what an exceptional nurse Danielle is and that she will be recognized and rewarded for this in any way possible.
