My Mother's history of schizophrenia had relapsed after a 15-year hiatus. Being a nurse at MacNeal Hospital as well, and like any other person would want, I wanted the utmost respect, dignity, and discretion regarding my mother's care. Daniel Max, the ED Nurse, provided just that and more. I had informed him of my concerns about her possibly being transferred to a general medical floor due to an electrolyte imbalance and being a patient amongst my coworkers, which I did not want as we are very private people.
Daniel addressed my concerns with such sympathy, empathy, and poise. He called the Nursing Supervisor and informed her of my situation and she agreed to accommodate my request to be on another unit. Daniel was completely understanding toward my mother, my family, and me. My family kept commenting on how sweet and sincere Daniel was.
Our mother was brought to MacNeal's ED by police and ambulance because she had refused to come willingly for psychiatric help. That night was such an ordeal and a reminder of what once was 15 years ago. We all dreaded the ED visit. But we strongly believe, that because of Daniel, our Nurse, my mother's initial care was great.
She was angry with her children for taking her to the help that she needed and would only speak with Daniel at the time. He was so understanding and soft-spoken toward us all. We can't thank him enough! There are many stigmas that unfortunately come along with mental health issues, and not once did our family feel that from Daniel.
Thank you, Daniel for treating our mother with such dignity and respect. You are awesome!
