Craig Short is nothing short of extraordinary. He cares immensely about everyone in his care, to include his patients as well as fellow team members. He is known for his creative bulletin boards and the extra effort he puts in to make sure all staff feel welcomed and appreciated as part of the team. A former teacher, he proves himself invaluable as a preceptor by using multiple modalities to orient our new staff members to the unit, ensuring they are prepared and ready to do their job when they come off orientation. He puts this same effort and level of care into each and every one of his patients when he is at the bedside. Craig is often times difficult to find at the nurses' station because he spends so much time in patients' rooms, tending to their medical needs, providing emotional support, and being a cheerleader to boost their spirits when it's needed. As a childhood cancer survivor himself, Craig is able to relate to our patients in ways that many of us can't. They can sense that he "gets it," making his care and concern that much more sincere. One patient commented to me that they love the extra care he takes to be a ninja coming in and out of his room at night so as not to disturb his sleep. "He's always thinking two steps ahead to ensure I have a good night, my nausea and pain are under control, and he disturbs my sleep as little as possible. It's the little things that add up to making a big difference!" You can see the extra effort and love that Craig puts into his every action, making him a true DAISY Nurse.
