Chris went down to the ER to check on the family and deliver the wound vac himself.
I would like to nominate Chris Nicholas for the DAISY Award. We had a patient who thought he could care for his wife at home. Soon after they made it home, the husband quickly realized he was not going to be able to take care of his wife the way she needed. The husband called and was able to get ahold of Chris and explained to him their circumstances. Chris was starting from scratch on discharge planning when the patient was already home. Even though Chris was in staffing with an entire floor as an assignment, he dove right in to help this family.
Chris got in contact with the surgeon to get all the needed documentation and tracked him down to get his needed signatures. Chris worked with our wound vac company to get them to expedite the approval process to try and get this family help as soon as possible. Being a holiday week, Chris knew this was going to take a little longer than expected to get the wound vac approved. Because of that, Chris got in contact with administration to get approval to give this family wound care supplies to hold them over until the wound vac was approved. Chris kept the husband informed during the whole process and even met the husband on his way home to deliver the wound care supplies so he had everything he needed to care for his wife until the wound vac was approved.
Two days later the wound vac got approved, but the husband ended up bringing his wife back to our ER for other complications. Chris went down to the ER to check on the family and deliver the wound vac himself to make sure the family truly had everything they needed. This was an extremely difficult time for this family and Chris was really able to turn that around for them with his commitment to our patient promise by caring for every patient, every time.
