She helped save their lives not only as a patient, but she also saved their future, and gave them a new list of hopeful possibilities.
I read somewhere once that children are this complicated package of endearing vulnerability mixed with resilient indestructibility. It’s sometimes hard to be prepared when we take care of trauma patients. However, just as I’ve seen countless times in our unit, our seemingly “ordinary” PICU team performs in extraordinary and heroic ways during these critical moments and it is often that we look to our leaders for help and guidance. Christina was the assistant nurse manager this one hard and busy day, leading us through one emergent intubation after the next with a steady, calm, and positive demeanor. In the midst of our busy unit, Christina took the time to advocate for our youngest patient that day. Without divulging too much information, she diligently made sure every single protocol had been met while multi-tasking alongside her normal charge nurse duties. Had she not, I truly believe that this baby’s and their sibling’s lives would not have been saved. I realized this when the police officer looked at Christina and said, “Thank you for what you do.” His tone of genuine sincerity clenched my heart because that simple thank you held an unspoken list of unfortunate situations if Christina had not taken the time to advocate for these children. She helped save their lives not only as a patient, but she also saved their future, and gave them a new list of hopeful possibilities. When someone takes the time to constantly remind and make you feel like you matter, and that you’re worthy- they’re a hero. Christina is a real-life superhero in my eyes, and that day will forever serve as a reminder of why I love being a PICU nurse.

Christina, you are an Extraordinary Nurse and an inspiration to us all! Congratulations, you make us proud!
