Through Christie Rodriguez cared for Baby J for only five shifts, the care she provided this family and her compassionate impact has made a lasting impression on this family.
The decision to discontinue care for a loved one is a difficult decision but it is even harder when a life has just started. Baby J was 5 days old when he was admitted to the NICU. He was transferred for surgical intervention but was not a candidate due to his medical status. As a result, Baby J's parents agreed to allow a natural death and to provide comfort care to their son. Baby J lived and was loved for 25 days, 20 of them in our NICU. He was cared for by his mother who stayed over every night to provide him care and comfort his every need around the clock. Part of this family's team was Christie Rodriguez, our NICU nurse.

Christie encouraged hands-on tasks and care by the mother and encouraged her to be a 'parent' in these circumstances. She guided and assisted the family in memory-making by capturing the moments they had with their baby. Christie arranged for professional pictures to be taken by Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep of Baby J and his mother. She also brought in a bold kit for the family to complete a mold of Baby J's foot.

In assuring the siblings were supported and adjusting to the visits, she consulted with Child Life specialists to read books and color with the siblings during this difficult time. Upon Baby J's passing, she attended the service at the family's home. Through Christie Rodriguez cared for Baby J for only five shifts, the care she provided this family and her compassionate impact has made a lasting impression on this family. As per the family, 'We appreciate Christie in every way and she will always have a special spot in our heart'."
