A patient presented to the emergency room and with her was her cat. The patient had recently become homeless due to many difficult situations in her life, no shelter in Syracuse would accept this patient when she was ready for discharge with her cat. The patient was adamant that she would go to the street rather than go to a shelter without her cat. Chantelle went in to speak with the patient and after spending a great deal of time with the patient convinced the patient to let her foster her beloved cat until she could get on her feet and take care of the cat.
When you have lost almost everything, the things that you have become so important to you. Chantelle was able to give this cat a safe temporary home and allow the patient to keep her dignity and to know that the cat she loves so much was safe and cared for. This, in turn, allowed the patient to be discharged to a safe warm women's shelter. Chantelle's act of kindness represents every one of Crouse's mission, vision, and values. We in the emergency room are lucky to work with such a kind caring person.
