Cassy then returned to the NICU, and in the spot next to her mom’s, stamped the baby’s hand into the mold as well. This family now has the most beautiful and special gift in the wake of their unimaginable heartbreak.
A family on our unit experienced a horrific tragedy. At just 30 weeks pregnant, a mom was hit by a semi while on her way to work during a snowstorm. Her baby girl was emergently delivered, but mom, however, did not survive. During her short hours that she was on life support in the ICU, her husband was splitting his time between being by her side and visiting his premature daughter, who was also critical, a floor below. Our hearts broke for this family. When it was clear they were going to remove this mom from support, Cassy made the incredible decision to go up to her room in the ICU and make a mold of her hand. She had her husband help and said, while it was so unbelievably sad and awful, it was so special to help him have that moment with her during her last moments of life. Cassy then returned to the NICU, and in the spot next to her mom’s, stamped the baby’s hand into the mold as well. This family now has the most beautiful and special gift in the wake of their unimaginable heartbreak. Not only will this baby girl have a piece of her and her mom together, but Dad has a 3-D mold of his wife’s hand to touch forever. Shortly after giving the Dad this gift, his mom said he sat on the couch touching and holding his wife’s hand for hours. I know what Cassy did was so incredibly difficult and took a lot of effort and bravery, but the gift that she left this family is one of the most special things anyone could’ve done for her. This is an example of the compassion and empathy Cassy has for others on a day-to-day basis. She is an outstanding nurse and we are so lucky to have her on our team.
