The mother was able to lay with the patient for several hours during the night and expressed much appreciation for making this happen for her.
We had a young patient who had unexpected complications from their traumatic injuries, which resulted in brain death and organ donation. The patient's parents did not leave their side the entity of their hospitalization, and on the third night of stay, RN Camille helped position the patient in the bed so that their mother could hold them one last time. This patient was critically ill and medically fragile at this time, but Camille knew that this mother would most likely not have the chance to hold her child while they were still alive again and put the interest of the patient's family above anything else. The mother was able to lay with the patient for several hours during the night and expressed much appreciation for making this happen for her. This is the type of compassion we should all strive for as nurses, and I am proud to call her my mentor and colleague.
